History

The castle’s first documented history appears in the Vatican’s secret archive, the Liber Censum, in papers dated to the 13th Century; however, it is certain that its origins go back much further to the 7th or 8th Centuries, known as the Lombard epoch. Its location borders the Lombardic Duchy of Spoleto and hence, inevitably, it had to be one of the wooden forts built to strengthen the Duchy’s borders due to the proximity of the Byzantine corridor, the strip that connected the Exarchate of Ravenna to Rome. We also know that during the 13th Century the, by then a, castle was occupied by the Guelphs, who were a faction supporting the Pope against the Emperor, the so-called Ghibellines. Over the intervening centuries the castle’s history was closely allied to Bettona, the nearest town, and to just a few important families: Segna, Crispolti, Della Penna, and Bianconi.
